According to DRUM, Kelly Khumalo’s friends have received “strange” messages allegedly from the singer, requesting R3100 bribe money to pay the police.
The hoax messages were sent from Kelly’s phone, which was apparently confiscated by the police along with others who were present at the crime scene.
The singer's close friends, Melinda Ferguson, Arthur Mafokate, Thami Kotloko and singer Wanda Baloyi were among those targeted.
Thami Kotlolo said: “I was with her earlier, so I knew for a fact she didn’t have a phone – it couldn’t have been her.”
Wanda Baloyi found out about the scam after she had already paid the money via ewallet. “I kept getting messages asking that I help,” says Wanda who eventually depositing the money. “She is already going through a lot, I was only trying to help a friend,” she said
The magazine called the so-called Detective Sello Mahlangu, who advised that Kelly was arrested for reckless driving.
“She was arrested around 15:30 for speeding and jumping a traffic light near the airport in her silver Hummer. She was brought to the Kempton Park Police Station by the JMPD,” said so-called detective
When the publication contacted the Kempton Park Police station, they were advised that they do not have a detective Mahlangu.
“We do not have a Detective Mahlangu or a docket with his name or Kelly’s,” said an officer who didn’t want to be named.
