THE SUDANESE WOMEN SENTENCED TO DEATH "TO BE SET FREE"

The Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death by hanging for apostasy (read here) is to be released from prison and go home to her husband. Meriam Ibrahim is  currently held in prison with her toddler son & new born child.

A Sudanese Under-secretary at the foreign ministry Abdullahi Alzareg reported that Sudan guaranteed religious freedom and was committed to protecting the woman, and further said Meriam would be free in the next couple of days.

Notwithstanding the aforesaid, Meriam's attorney, Elshareef Ali Mohammed believes that the Sudan government has ulterior motives, that it seeks to prevent the international media from interfering with its laws.

He released the following statement:

"It’s a statement to silence the international media. This is what the government does. We will not believe that she is being freed until she walks out of the prison. If they were to release her, the announcement would come from the appeal court and not from the ministry of foreign affairs. But at least it shows our campaign to free Meriam is rattling them. We must keep up the pressure.”
